The Fledgling Crafter

Adventures of a struggling crafster.

Pel if I Can

Still playing a little bit of catch up. I did not really start feeling better from that stupid flu until last Sunday. I did manage to finish a block from my Monterey class.  Behold the pelican:

It turned out fairly well. I am not totally happy with the light colors I chose. I think the piece may be a little too dark. This picture is not helping. Next up a turtle!

Bear-ly Finished

So I must admit, this last month has totally flown by! I had a major project due at work, took too many quilty classes, and to top it off – got the flu. Lucky me. It all adds up to a less than productive me. Well finally my dry streak is over. I have finished the next block in my Yosemite quilt class. Only one block, but it is better than nothing 🙂

Here is my bear…

I am not completely happy with the result, but not disappointed either. I think I really messed up on the eyes. And somehow the colors don’t quite pop enough. I may be just a little too critical as well. Me overanalyze?!? Never.

Exciting news, I have signed up for my first fabric swap!! I will be participating in the Scrappy Trip Around the World block exchange hosted by Katie at  Katie’s Quilting Corner. I love her podcast and blog. If you haven’t listened or checked it out, do give it a try. I will keep you posted.

Here’s to a crafty weekend!

Adventures in Applique

I have just finished my first two applique blocks! I am currently taking two classes from the awesome Nancy Brown at my local quilt shops. She does awesome work. If you have a chance, please check out her website. My classes each meet once a month for five months. Each month we do a new block. So for my first month our homework was a cute otter and a rainbow trout.

Here is what my class turned in:

and here are our beautiful fish…

I think we did pretty well if I do say so myself. I will let you guess which ones are mine…

I will admit that I did a lot of seam ripping. It was all done by needle turn. It was easy to get into a rhythm after a little while. What I do not like – eyeballs!! They are wicked tough. I guess they just take a lot of practice. Will keep you posted as these classes progress.
